How to Set Up Your Smarttek Hot Water System
Take your Smarttek Hot Water Unit and hang it in an upright position using the foldable handle on the back of the unit or the temporary mounting brackets on the top and bottom of your unit. The temporary mounting brackets can also be secured into the brackets of a portable Smarttek Tripod Stand if you are using one.
Connecting the Gas Hose
Now that you have your unit hanging in an upright position, take your Smarttek Gas Hose and Regulator and connect the 3/8 female BSP end onto the gas inlet valve of your Smarttek Hot Water Unit. The gas inlet valve is the pipe at the base of your Smarttek Hot Water Unit located on the far left hand side when looking at your unit from the front. The gas inlet valve already has a 1/2 inch to 3/8 inch brass adapter glued on and attached to the gas inlet ready for your Smarttek Gas Hose and Regulator to be connected.
Next, grab your 9kg gas bottle and connect the regulator end of your Smarttek Gas Hose and Regulator directly into your 9kg Gas Bottle.
Turn your gas bottle on and spray soapy water around both of the connection points (where the gas hose connects into the gas bottle and also the end where the gas hose connects to your Smarttek Hot Water Unit). Bubbles will appear if you have any gas leaks at a connection point and you will need to ensure there are no gas leaks present before continuing any further with your set up.
All connections are designed to be tightened to just over hand-tight and tools are not required, however if you need to tighten the gas connection a little further to eliminate a gas leak at the connection point to your Smarttek Hot Water Unit, ensure that you use 2 shifting spanners. The first shifting spanner to hold the brass adapter in a stationary position (as it is glued on) and the second shifting spanner to tighten your Gas Hose further onto your brass adapter.
Connecting the Shower Hose and Rose
Once you have secured your gas hose into position, you can then attach your Smarttek Shower Hose by screwing the shorter ‘nut’ end of the shower hose onto the pipe in the centre of your Smarttek Hot Water Unit, this is the hot water outlet.
With the other end of your Smarttek Premium Shower Hose take your Smarttek Shower Rose Twist ‘shower head’ and screw the longer tapered connection from the Smarttek Premium Shower Hose onto your Smarttek Premium Shower Hose.
Connecting the Water Inlet and Smarttek Pump
You will see that your water inlet pipe already has the male water quick connect fitting attached to your unit on the far right hand side, closest to your battery compartment.
Next we will connect your Smarttek Pump up-to the 2 lengths of 8mm diameter hoses that are inside your Smarttek Kit.
When Using a Smarttek 4.3Lpm Pump
Take your 4.3Lpm pump and remove the 2 red plugs from the water inlet and water outlet of your pump. The red plugs are placed onto the water inlet and also the water outlet of your pump during quality control to allow your pump to retain a residual amount of water inside to keep the diaphragm of the pump lubricated so it does not become dry. A well lubricated and moistened diaphragm allows your Smarttek Pump to retain its self-priming function.
Take the first length of hose and place one of the stainless steel hose clamps over one end of the hose. Then push this same end of the hose onto the barb connector of the water inlet side of your 4.3Lpm pump. Slide the stainless steel hose clamp over the hose where it is pushed onto the pump inlet valve and use a screwdriver to tighten the hose clamp into position. It is the hose clamps job to ensure the length of hose stays firmly attached to the pump to prevent any air from entering the connection point.
The other end of this hose can then be rested inside your bucket of fresh water.
Take your second length of hose and attach it to the water outlet side of your 4.3Lpm pump in the same way, securing it into position using the other stainless steel hose clamp provided.
Once the second length of hose is secured onto your pump, take the female water quick connector and attach it to the other end of the water outlet hose coming from the pump.
When Using a Smarttek 6Lpm Pump
Take your 6Lpm pump and remove the 2 red plugs from the water inlet and water outlet of your pump. The red plugs are inserted in the water inlet and also the water outlet of your pump during quality control to allow your pump to retain a residual amount of water inside to keep the diaphragm of the pump lubricated so it does not become dry. A well lubricated and moistened diaphragm allows your Smarttek Pump to retain its self-priming function.
Now that you have removed the red plugs from your pump, we can connect the quick fittings and hoses.
Take the two male water quick connectors and screw one of them onto the water inlet of your Smarttek 6Lpm pump and the other onto the water outlet of your Smarttek 6Lpm pump.
Next, take the first length of hose and attach a female water quick connector to one end. Once attached, click this length of hose onto the water inlet of your Smarttek 6Lpm pump.
The other end of this hose can then be rested inside your bucket of fresh water.
Take your second length of hose and attach a female water quick connector to each end.
Once attached, click one end onto the water outlet of your Smarttek 6Lpm Pump and click the other end onto the male water quick connector that is already attached to the water inlet of your Smarttek Hot Water Unit.
Connecting your Smarttek Pump to 12v power source
Take the 2.5m pump wiring harness ‘power cable’ and connect to your 4.3Lpm/6Lpm pump using the SAE connector. Push it in nice and tight as this is a waterproof connection point.
Check that the on/off switch along the pump wiring harness is switched to the ‘off’ position, then connect the black alligator clamp on the the negative terminal of your 12v battery and the red alligator clamp on the the positive terminal of your 12v battery.
Inserting the D Cell Batteries
Next, unlock and open the lid to your battery compartment. The Battery compartment is located to the right side of your water inlet connection.
Take your 2 x D cell sample batteries and insert them one at a time into the battery compartment. Take a look at the inside of the battery compartment lid to check the direction for the batteries to be inserted. (when looking at the front of your Smarttek Hot Water Unit, the battery at the back of the unit has the positive ‘pointed’ end of the battery pointing towards the ground and the battery at the front of your unit has the negative ‘flat’ end of the battery pointing towards the ground).
To ensure a good connection with the battery terminals, insert both of the batteries around 3/4 of the way into the battery compartment, then gently close the lid and lock it into a closed position. By using this method the battery compartment lid will push the batteries in the final part of the way and ensure a good connection is made with both the top and bottom battery terminals.
Turning your Unit On
Now that we have all of your accessories connected, locate the on/off switch on the underside of your Smarttek Hot Water Unit and push it in toward the back of your unit. This is the ‘On’ position.
All Smarttek Hot Water Units are activated by water flow, so even though you now have your unit all connected up and ready to use, to allow your Smarttek Hot Water Unit to turn on and produce hot water you will need to have your water flowing through the unit.
This is nice and easy to do, simply turn the switch on the pump wire harness ‘on’ so the pump is receiving power from your 12v battery and twist your Smarttek Shower Rose into the ‘on’ position to allow the water to flow freely out of the shower rose.
With the water now flowing, your info display panel will turn on and the gas burners will ignite, allowing the warm water to flow freely from your shower rose for you to enjoy a lovely hot shower.
